Notes
Yeah Yeah Cosmic Love (which I’ll just be referring to “Cosmetic Love” from here on, since that should have been the title) continues Smile’s soggy middle. It’s a better song than Arasoi no Machi or Eden no Yoru ni, and definitely has a more Yemon feel. Maybe it fits the image of the album with its fairly cheap pop-rock sound, but we’ve heard already heard the band do better takes on that idea several tracks earlier.
The lyrics particularly are a bit disappointing, as Cosmetic Love could have been pulled up a bit if they were more interesting. The phrase “cosmetic love” itself is kind of cool sounding, but it all reads as a simple story of a lady-killer that values what’s on the outside more than anything else. It doesn’t really go any deeper than that, and might have resonated better if it were more like Chelsea Girl: A pop-rock song with lyrics that are actually kind of interesting and disturbing. It can be done, it just wasn’t done here.
According to Yoshii’s comments in the booklet for the Triad Complete Box, the chorus wasn’t finalized until about halfway through recording, and was much more simple than what it ended up being. So it’s a song that very much came together at the last minute. Unlike the previous two songs on the album, this one has actually been played live a few times: During the tours for both Smile (1995) and Four Seasons (1995-1996), Mekara Uroko 10 (1999, with a full brass section and backup singers), and Super FC Party 2017 -Drastic Holiday-
