Original Lyrics
Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey honey
Baby
Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey!
Close your eyes
Close your eyes
Close your eyes

Translated Lyrics
My 100% pure-hearted baby, we’ve got enough fruit juice, tingle-tingle
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
I’ll tell you something else about me that you don’t know
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go see the late show
It’s only painful at first, hey honey
Like a perverted portrait in wide-screen, baby
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
You look so pathetic standing still, can you spin around slowly for me?
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Picking the lock on a closed door, let’s go see
It’s only scary at first
You can have your favorite dream, close your eyes
Touch me, spin around, take a break, smile
Blinding psychedelic blue
It’s a magic ticket, and only I have one
My body and mind are clear, and now I’m going to remember
You’ll actually resort to any amount of brutality for love
What you did in the past to your own lover……your lover……your lover’s……!!
Blurring like tears is just another natural physiological phenomenon
You can see your favorite version of the past, close your eyes
You can have the same dreams someone else had in the past, close your eyes
Take it, bite it, sit down, go back
Blinding psychedelic blue
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Notes
This is one the biggest callback to pre-Smile Yemon that this album has to offer. There are phrases here that are weird and off kilter and imply some sort of mental or physical violence. The melodies are also something right off of Experience Movie (think Morality Slave mixed with Drastic Holiday, maybe), and it wouldn’t surprise me if this song was actually a hold-over from that period. The problem is that this was achieved to a much greater effect with past songs. While it has the usual strong melody, this makes Psychedelic Blue comes off as more of an empty callback to something from Experience Movie (again, assuming it isn’t a hold-over). It almost betrays a lack of confidence in the general direction they were trying to go with Smile, saying “If you don’t like this, we can still do these kinds of songs too!”.
The bridge is written all in katakana to help convey the crazed and hectic feeling that’s done through the effect on Yoshii’s vocals. There’s also a linguistic thing worth pointing out that you find in a good amount of Japanese lyrics and poetry: Specifying an object and not a verb to purposefully remain mysterious or to not want to say exactly what happens. In this song it’s the “What you did in the past to your own lover……your lover……your lover’s……!!” line (“kako no kimi wa jibun no tame ni koibito wo……koibito wo……koibito no!!……”). You get “koibito” (“lover”) as the object in “koibito wo”, but you never know what the verb is. Killed? Hurt? Who knows!
I also don’t think these lyrics are strictly about violence, but mostly drug use. The phrase “psychedelic blue” itself could imply that, but mostly the first verse of the song in particular. The first line is a very weird one: “My 100% pure-hearted baby, we’ve got enough fruit juice, tingle-tingle”. The “fruit juice” part of this isn’t contextualized in any way, but it feels like it’s either a code word for some kind of drugs or it’s literal drug-laced fruit juice. “jinjin” is an onomatopoeia to indicate tingling, which could refer to the effect felt after drinking the “fruit juice”. From here it just naturally follows that “going to the late show” is actually just talking about getting high, and the speaker here is telling their “100% pure-hearted baby” who’s never done this before that “It’s only painful at first”. And of course being able to have your favorite dream and see the past can all be them just tripping on whatever this is.
I’m not sure if it’s for the same reasons I’m not fond of it, but in terms of live performances this song might as well not even exist. As far as I’m aware, it’s never been performed even a single time. There aren’t too many songs in Yemon’s discography that have been completely and utterly ignored, so I’d love to know the story as to why this is one of them.
