Notes
This is a very underappreciated song from this album, and in Yemon’s catalog in general. It is VERY pop-y, especially given what we’ve gotten used to from them up until this point. It could also be a bit surprising to go into this from the intro track “Smile” (which isn’t necessarily pop-y), which of course is the song that this one was meant to be transitioned into from. Given that Smile was meant to be a pop album though, a song like this is the perfect statement to open it with.
If you’re turned off by the increased amount of synthesizer and the guitar being slightly more down in the mix than usual…I’m not sure what to tell you. That certainly won’t be the case for all of the songs on Smile (in fact this is probably the song that has the most blatant pop sound to it on the album), but it’s a very honest way to introduce listeners to the album. You could also complain about the lyrics bordering on being vapid…and maybe they are compared to Yoshii’s usual writing. The “bonjour Japon” that’s so prevalent throughout the song is a bit silly, though it makes the lyrics very sing-able.
But the lyrics do succeed pretty well in painting the picture of the scene for this song: Two people being in love, obviously in France. Yoshii’s viewpoint character is obviously very into Mary, and the lyrics mention that she’s a more masculine woman in a couple of different ways: By outright saying it (“kare no you na kanojo to”), and also mentioning that they’re both wearing expensive and chic suits. It’s done a very natural way that doesn’t really cause this fact to stand out or make it a focal point.
And here Yoshii really makes up for what he might be missing in lyrical content with a strong melody. When used as a concert opener (which it absolutely was during the Smile tour), there weren’t many better choices at this point in their career that could have been used to open a show with more energy. However like a lot of the other songs on Smile, this one hasn’t been played live too much over the years outside of the initial Smile tour. The only other times it’s known to have re-appeared was for Mekara Uroko 10 (1999, this version has a brass section and backup singers) as a part of a medley with Rainbow Man, and Mekara Uroko 28 in late 2017.
