LOVE IS ZOOPHILIA

  • Lyrics: Kazuya Yoshii
  • Music: Kazuya Yoshii & Hideaki Kikuchi
  • Arrangement: The Yellow Monkey

Original Lyrics

HEY LET’S WALK IN

I’M A ROCK’N ROLLER
両性具有 相思相愛 I’M A ROCK’N ROLLER

Romanized Lyrics

geretsu na kamisori iro no kuchibue wo hibiki totemo
okashi na dokusaisha no soushi souai
jaaku na romance kimi to me no mae no boku ni
hizamazuite ruby iro no yume wo kuwaeru baby

hametsu no music senaka ni aibu wo
wagamama na boku no machine ni tonight

Oh yeah, oh yeah, zoophilia!

Translated Lyrics

Whistling the color of a grubby razor sounds out
In love with a very strange dictator
We’re in an evil romance together, and you kneel before me
And take my ruby colored dreams in your mouth, baby

With the music of ruin caressing my back
I’m so selfish, so be my machine tonight

The feel of mink, huggin’ and lovin’
With diamonds in our mouths like dogs, hey let’s walk in
A magical canvas, a metal palette
Drawing a beloved self portrait
With a blindfold on, my heart’s flustered

Giving a deep kiss to a beast, with a glass smile
I’m so selfish, so be my machine tonight

(Yeah tonight…oh, rock’n roll!)

With the music of ruin caressing my back
I’m so selfish, so be my machine tonight

Androgyny, being in love, I’m a rock’n roller
Androgyny, being in love, I’m a rock’n roller

Oh yeah, oh yeah, zoophilia!

Notes

Love is Zoophilia - Lovin and Emma (Nisshin Power Station)
Yoshii and Emma hamming it up for the crowd (Nisshin Power Station, 1993)

Yemon had written this song in their indie days, well before Experience Movie released in 1993. The earliest performance I could find was 12/28/1991 at Shibuya La.mama (youtube link below), not terribly longer after Bunched Birth had been released. It sounds every bit like a hold over from that time period, because it’s just sort of…unremarkable. Sure it’s a rocky number that’s fun enough to listen to, but there are a lot of other Yemon songs that fit that same description and have a little bit more going on than this.

Love Is Zoophilia - Band (Super Japan Tour)
Band shot from the performance during the Super Japan Tour (2016)

This is the only song on Experience Movie that Emma helped write the music for, compared to two songs back on Night Snails (both of which were quite a bit better than this one). Musically it’s a fairly standard upbeat rock number that definitely fits into the type of sets they played during their La.mama days. The lyrics seem like they’re just they’re just a mish-mash of weird phrases that don’t even really have a loose theme to them, except for maybe being a wild rock star. “hametsu no music” (“the music of ruin”) is a pretty neat phrase (Yoshii sometimes says it aloud as the intro is playing), but that’s about it. In fact the word “zoophilia” doesn’t even really have anything to do with the lyrics (which is probably a good thing). It only even appears during the outro, and isn’t written at all in the official lyrics found in the booklet.

Love Is Zoophilia - Emma (Super Japan Tour)
My opinions on the song don’t stop Emma from getting into his part! (Super Japan Tour, 2016)

Love Is Zoophilia doesn’t seem to have been much of live mainstay after the early days. The second youtube link below is a performance from Shibuya Public Hall on 06/20/1992, which probably was a release party for The Night Snails And Plastic Boogie (which would come out the next day). In terms of recorded performances, one can be found on the bonus disc of the currently expensive Live Box, from a concert at Nisshin Power Station on 01/26/1993. It also eventually found its way onto the set list of the Super Japan Tour 2016 (at least by the time of the Saitama Super Arena show, which is what the official recording of that tour was of). I say eventually because it wasn’t originally in that place on the set list, Chelsea Girl was (I was at the first night of that tour in Tokyo, and that was the only difference between the two sets). Personally, I would have rather seen them leave Chelsea Girl in for the rest of the tour. When played live they usually put a more concise outro to the song, since it just fades out on the recording. The two youtube links below feature different takes on that idea, the first one being the outro that was most frequently used.

Love Is Zoophilia - Heesey (Super Japan Tour)
Heesey just wants to make sure you remember: Rock ‘n’ Roll
