2013 has been a bit of a strange year for me. It’s the second year in a row that a particular set of personal issues have come to light, but it’s also been a year of fairly great and interesting discoveries in the gaming world.
My wife and I played Tri every chance that we had, and we weren’t even playing together. While one of us played the other would watch and make comments or criticisms. We helped each other learn the game, and in retrospect that may have been the biggest reason why Tri succeeded for me where Portable failed.
The writing in this game is absolutely not trite or trivial, which is what allows for characters that I became attached to in a way that had not happened to me in a game since the 16 or 32-bit eras.
But then I heard the words that made my heart leap and brought back feelings of wonder once felt by my 11 year old self: “It’s like Super Mario World.”
