I went with the translation of “a funny candy” for the title, because there are backing vocals during the outro where “a funny candy” is being sung in English. Yoshii mentioned in the booklet of the Triad Years box set that the “funny candy” in question is opium (which makes sense given the time period that Jaguar is from). And as it happens, if you take the “a hen” (which if you accept that this is a combination of English and Japanese can mean “a funny” or “a strange”) back to Japanese, you get the word for opium, “ahen”. So the title itself is a bit of a wordplay.
And so the lyrics are probably meant to be the crazy ramblings of a Jaguar who is extremely high on opiates. Just what on earth is a “uterine mouthpiece” anyway?! But the imagery of it all really works. The later lyrics in the song also indicate that said drug use might be as a result of being in mental pain. Possibly from being in the military, and missing Mary. The high pitched, almost stretched sounding guitar line that repeats throughout the song, tense lead lines, and erratic sounding solo all do just as much to give this song the feeling that it strives for though. And together with Heesey’s crunchy bass line, it all just comes together. This may be the best example that we’ve seen so far of the music pulling just as much weight (if not more, honestly) as the lyrics in terms of feeling and creating an atmosphere.
On top of feeling just like it should, it also does a great job of keeping the momentum that Jaguar Hard Pain has been building as an album going. Fine Fine Fine really took things up in tempo from the opener, Second Cry. It was also a heavier sounding song compared to Yemon’s standard fare. While this one certainly goes more for atmosphere than it does being heavy sounding, it keeps the temp and excitement levels high, not yet willing to give the listener a break for a ballad.
There’s particular oddity in the lyrics for which I think the meaning is hidden, possibly known only to Yoshii. The phrase “kodomo wa harisenbon tsukisasu” (or as I chose to translated it, “A child stabs himself with a blow fish”). It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense on its own, or even really in the context of the song. There are no particles in the sentence apart from the “wa” subject maker indicating that a child is the subject of the sentence. Though in listening to it, it really sounds to me like he sings “harisenbon WO tsukisasu”, indicating that the thing being stabbed with is the blow fish. However we can’t be completely sure of who or what is getting stabbed, since there’s no “ni” particle to indicate the recipient of the stabbing.
After spending some time scouring Japanese fan blogs for any interpretations of the meaning beyond the literal one, I came up completely empty handed. Then when I was watching the performance of this song, Yoshii pulled up his sleeve and stabbed himself in the wrist as he was singing this line. So it’s PROBABLY meant to be imagery of Jaguar seeing a kid shooting up in the street or something, but he may have needed to make it more difficult to interpret in order to get it around censors.
Also I’m not sure if the phrase “looking for badgers” is meant to be literal, but I suspect it’s meant to be something like “looking for girls”. If it is though, it seems to be completely made up by Yoshii. I can’t find any proof of it being an existing phrase, and Google searches return nothing but the lyrics to this song.
This isn’t a song that tends to be played live terribly often. It appeared during the Jaguar Hard Pain tour (1994), the Sicks tour (1997), Spring Tour (2000) (this particular performance was included on the extra disc in the Live Box. It features Yoshii dropping his mic, losing sound on it, and going over to grab Emma’s afterward), and again during the reunion Super Japan Tour (2016).
