Sora no ao to hontou no kimochi (Blue Sky And True Mind)

  • Lyrics: Kazuya Yoshii
  • Music: Hideaki Kikuchi
  • Arrangement: The Yellow Monkey

Original Lyrics

Baby

Blue sky and true mind

“Now I’m flying in the sky like a bird
The big buildings I see everyday are much smaller now
In the sky there’s nothing in my way
Nothing.
And I feel fine.”

Blue sky and true mind

Blue sky and true mind

Translated Lyrics

As I ride on this rollercoaster that spins round and round
Baby, I want to take your hand
And afterward I want to steal a kiss
That will leave you feeling a bit confused

Whatever god might look like
It doesn’t really matter to me
I want to leave past promises
Buried on the other side

I wonder how far the sky continues on for

I want to try spitting
In the face of someone I hate
And I want you to hear this song of mine
With my persecution complex and all

My soul will race through
A rainbow tunnel at high speed

Blue sky and true mind
I want to fly freely through the sky
Spreading my wings of black and white
As I cut through the clouds

“Now I’m flying in the sky like a bird
The big buildings I see everyday are much smaller now
In the sky there’s nothing in my way
Nothing.
And I feel fine.”

Blue sky and true mind
I want to fly beautifully through the sky
Spreading my wings of good and evil
I want to give you a wink

Blue sky and true mind
I want to fly beautifully forever
And I want you to see
The blue sky, and my true mind
And I want you to see
The blue sky, and my true mind

Notes

Sora no Ao to Hontou no Kimochi - Yoshii Fly (Four Seasons Tour, 1996)
Four Seasons tour, 1996

Blue Sky And True Mind is our Emma co-written song for the album, and in my opinion this is the best song that he’s helped write yet! It feels euphoric and and ethereal in a way that the band hasn’t quite done before or since, and Emma’s music has a lot to do with that. It’s some of my favorite guitar work of his. Yoshii’s simple but effective lyrics really support that mood too, with a vocal performance to match. It feels like the band members were all on the same wavelength even more so than usual, everything about it just works.

It’s also very of a piece with Father, which is maybe why it’s the next track on the album, and has been played directly after it during live performances. But whereas Father was more of a snapshot of euphoric feelings from a specific moment in time mixed with sentimentality toward one’s father, Blue Sky and True Mind acts more as an elevation of those euphoric feelings. It takes them maybe even outside of the bounds of the earth itself, since the lyrics feel like they could be describing an out of body experience or something. It’s the best track that they could have picked to end the album with!

This song has a bit of a special place in my heart, and is maybe my favorite on the album. I’ve always liked it quite a bit, but what cemented it for me was seeing them play it in-person as the last song before the encore during the 2016 Super Japan Tour. Something really clicked with me during that performance, maybe because I was experiencing similar euphoric feelings to those described in the song from finally getting to see this band that has been so important to me, that I had long since given up on ever having a chance of being able to see.

The English that comes in part-way through the song (referred to as “Message from the Sky” in the album booklet) is spoken by Simon Sheridan, one of the people credited as Assistant Engineers for the album. It’s always left out of the song when performed live.

Since it’s featured as an actual lyric in the song as it is, I decided to just go with “Blue Sku and True Mind” as the title translation. It’s a fine enough translation, though I probably would have gone with “true feelings” instead of “true mind”. Oh well!

In terms of live performances this has gotten a bit of play, but maybe not as much as it should. It was played pretty consistently during the Four Seasons tour (1996), on some dates on the Sicks tour (1997), Super Japan Tour 2016, and the 30th Anniversary Live at Yoyogi.
