Translated Lyrics
An upward glancing kinky lady, a free-range euphoria man
Take a good look at the sticky-fingered glass machine, glycerin boy
Visualize sucking on the bones
Emotion that leads to conceit and madness
(Movement damage) Even if we (Movement damage) take back our delicacy
We’ll be dreaming, deaf to the songs of the future
(Movement damage) Even if we (Movement damage) take back our delicacy
We’ll be an unloved paranoia band
In subjective late show
An adventure of sex appeal and nausea, the media’s dreams are cosmic blues
A time machine with poor visibility, a trippin’ night that breaks the clock
Lying low and animalizing, wow, trans!
Changing masks makes for an intensely calming emotion
(Movement damage) Even if we (Movement damage) take back our delicacy
We’ll be dreaming, unable to rip off the demon’s claws
(Movement damage) Even if we (Movement damage) take back our delicacy
We’ll be an unloved paranoia band
In subjective late show
A silicon crayfish is cowardly and disposable
Thiamine sucks dirty, open wounds dry
A paradox surrounding bad dreams
Confusion is a well known instrument, hanky-panky baby
Dance physical
A cross made from naked sacrifices, ride on time!
(Movement damage) Caressing (Movement damage) with delicacy
We’re dreaming, with a texture like performing fellatio
Dreaming baby
(Movement damage) Even if we (Movement damage) take back our delicacy
We’ll be an unloved paranoia band
In subjective late show
An unforgiveable paranoia band
In subjective…(subjective)
Subjective…late show
“Hello exciting show tonight!”
Notes
Though it isn’t written in the official lyrics, I’m fairly certain Yoshii says “You are corruption!” at the beginning.
This was a song that Yemon had been performing since their indie days, but didn’t make it onto Bunched Birth. Musically it’s a lot of fun, and it was very smart to put it as the song that the opener Song for Night Snails flowed right into. It has a really great and catchy vocal melody, and the “movement damage” (which in of itself is a great phrase to wonder about what it even means) backing part of the chorus is fun to sing along with even if you don’t know the rest of the words.
However, this is one of the best examples of why Yoshii’s early writing suffered from him seemingly feeling like he had to include English words. The lyrics just don’t add up to much, even if they do have some interesting turns of phrase. Most of them are found within the choruses, like the reoccurring “ai sarenai paranoia band” (an unloved paranoia band: Probably either a band that is unloved and paranoid, or paranoid about being unloved). This seems to tie in pretty closely with being in a “subjective late show”, which suggests these parts specifically may have be referring back to their early days when they weren’t very well liked and were often told that they just weren’t a good band. I don’t necessarily want a song that’s a whole story about that, but really just verses that aren’t largely nonsense to go to along with the choruses.
Some of Yoshii’s choices of English words are even a little baffling…thiamine? That’s just vitamin B1! Did he just turn to the T section in an English dictionary, close his eyes and point to a word? I think he could have come up with something better if he hadn’t felt obligated to throw in English phrases, but this is a pretty prevalent theme throughout a lot of Yoshii’s very early writing. It’s pretty obviously a hold over from their indie days, where a song with lyrics like this probably would have helped them stand out quite a bit in the club scene. I love listening to this song and it’s a ton of fun, but there’s really nothing to analyze or dwell on lyrically here.
The use of “animalize” here is almost certainly a word that Yoshii knew from the 1984 KISS album with the same name. One way of translating the phrase “nakazu tobazu animalize” could be “Animalize is obscure”. But if they’re referring to the KISS album, that’s just simply not true! Animalize was their best selling album since 1979’s “Dynasty” at that point. So I chose to assume he just borrowed the word, and wasn’t actually referring to the KISS album.
There’s a noticeable gap where this song doesn’t seem to have been performed live between their indie days and Mekara Uroko 7 in December 1996, the concert where they first really started looking back to the early parts of their life as a band by playing older songs. It would make an appearance at pretty much every one of the Mekara Uroko concerts, and turned into a song where Yoshii got to be more of a goof than he otherwise would. After the performance of Pearl Light of Revolution with an orchestra at Mekara Uroko 7 (a moment that Yoshii has cited as being one of the best and most memorable to him as a musician), they launched right into Subjective Late Show with that same orchestra backing them up. Yoshii not only got close to and interacted with the crowd quite a bit during this performance, but also took the opportunity to mess with the orchestra members by sitting next to a violinist and fake-playing next to her. He would repeat this same thing with the orchestra at Mekara Uroko 27 in December 2016.
